Saving Private Ryan: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for intense prolonged realistically graphic sequences of war violence, and for language.

A landmark World War II drama for older teens and one of the most graphically violent war films ever made. After D-Day, a squad of soldiers crosses Nazi-held France to bring home a private whose three brothers have been killed. The roughly 25-minute Omaha Beach opening shows men shot, burned, torn apart and disemboweled in realistic detail, and later battles include slow, close-up deaths of members of the squad. Swearing is frequent and the soldiers trade crude stories about sex, but there is no nudity. We suggest 16 for the gore, with a parent ready to talk about what these soldiers went through.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Extremely graphic: severed limbs, spilled organs, spurting arteries, and men set on fire and blown apart. Later a soldier is slowly stabbed in hand-to-hand fighting, a medic bleeds to death, and surrendering soldiers are shot.

Language

Strong

Frequent. Plugged In counted more than 30 f- and s-words combined; other words include asshole and bastard, God's name is misused, and the acronym FUBAR is spelled out. Soldiers use slurs for the enemy.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sex or nudity. Soldiers swap crude stories about past sexual experiences, including one about a girl back home, and make a crude joke about another man.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Soldiers smoke cigarettes and chew tobacco throughout, and there is some social drinking. No drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

The beach landing is a sustained, chaotic nightmare of death, and later firefights are almost as tense. A mother learns that three of her sons have been killed, and several sympathetic characters die.

Worth talking about

The squad risks eight lives to save one man. Was the mission worth it, and how should the survivors honor what others gave up for them?
