The Green Mile: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence, language and some sex-related material.

A moving but harrowing prison drama for older teens who can handle disturbing violence. It follows death-row guards in 1935 and a gentle, enormous inmate convicted of raping and killing two little girls. The crime itself is not shown, but its aftermath is, with the dead girls in his arms. The executions are hard to watch, especially a deliberately botched electrocution in which a man burns. Expect frequent profanity, the n-word and other slurs, crude sexual talk and implied married sex. The graphic execution and child-murder content put it at 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Several electrocutions are shown; one is sabotaged, and the prisoner screams and burns as witnesses flee. The rape and murder of two girls is central though not shown, a guard breaks a prisoner's fingers with a club, and a man is shot dead.

Language

Strong

Movieguide counted 45 obscenities and 14 profanities, including f-words and s-words. Villains use the n-word and 'Sambo,' and there are anti-gay and disability slurs.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A married couple has sex, heard and implied rather than shown. A guard flips through sexual cartoons, an inmate grabs a guard through the bars and makes lewd remarks, and men are briefly seen naked from behind.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Adults drink beer, and no one is shown drunk. Neither Movieguide nor Common Sense notes any drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

The sabotaged execution is long and horrifying, and the image of two dead little girls is upsetting. A cruel guard stomps on a prisoner's beloved pet mouse, and a terminally ill woman's suffering and the ending carry heavy grief.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Death of a child
  • Racism
  • Animal death

Worth talking about

The film raises hard questions about the death penalty and about justice for a Black man in the 1930s South. Some critics also fault how Coffey is written; talk about why.
