The Shawshank Redemption: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for language and prison violence.

A celebrated prison drama about hope and friendship that works best for mature teens. It is not gory, but it is harsh: the main character is repeatedly raped by a prison gang (implied rather than shown), guards beat inmates, one fatally, a young prisoner is shot dead, and two characters die by suicide, one by hanging shown on screen. Profanity is frequent, with well over a hundred obscenities including many f-words. The opening briefly shows an adulterous couple kissing, and inmates are seen naked from behind. The prison rape and suicides, more than the violence itself, set the age at 15.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Guards beat inmates savagely, killing one new prisoner and leaving another paralyzed, and a young inmate is gunned down at night. A gang repeatedly sexually assaults the main character; the rapes happen off screen, but scenes show him cornered, beaten and threatened.

Language

Strong

Movieguide counted 126 obscenities and 19 profanities, including many f-words, 'motherf---er,' 'asshole' and 'son of a bitch,' plus an anti-gay slur and jokes about rape.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

In the opening, an adulterous couple kisses and begins to undress before the scene cuts away. New inmates are seen naked from behind, pinups decorate cells, and dialogue references oral and anal sex.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

In the opening, a man drinks whiskey heavily in his car while holding a gun. Inmates smoke constantly and trade cigarettes, and a group shares beer on a rooftop.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

No horror, but long stretches of cruelty and despair: solitary confinement, an elderly parolee's hanging shown on screen, a second character's suicide by gunshot with a bloody aftermath, and an escape through a sewage pipe.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Suicide

Worth talking about

A longtime inmate cannot cope with freedom after decades inside. Talk about what the film says about institutions, and how hope keeps Andy going.
