Logan: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong brutal violence and language throughout, and for brief nudity.

A brutal, grief-heavy Western in superhero clothing, for older teens and adults only. Claws punch through skulls, heads are cut off, a kind farm family, teenage son included, is murdered in their home, and a young girl kills with the same savagery as the adults. Video footage shows lab children mistreated and hurting themselves. Logan carries a bullet meant for himself, a captive mutant kills himself with grenades, and main characters die devastating deaths in front of a child. Expect about 45 f-words and a brief topless moment. The emotional weight is as heavy as the gore, which is why we suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Graphic and constant: claws through skulls, limbs and heads cut off, and a farm family, teenage son included, slaughtered at home. A tween girl kills armed men and carries a severed head. A captive mutant kills himself with grenades, and main characters die bloody deaths.

Language

Strong

Plugged In counted about 45 f-words and nearly 25 s-words. Also "motherf--ker," "a--," "damn," "hell" and misuses of God's and Jesus' names. Drunk limo partiers yell "U.S.A.!" at Latino onlookers, and Spanish insults like "pendejo" turn up.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A partying woman in Logan's limo pulls down her dress and briefly bares her breasts. Some revealing evening wear. No sex scenes or other nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Logan, described as an alcoholic, drinks heavily from flasks to self-medicate his failing body and illegally buys prescription drugs for Charles from a hospital worker. Limo passengers drink heavily.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Relentlessly grim: Charles's seizures paralyze everyone nearby, footage shows children abused in a lab and harming themselves, and Logan keeps a bullet to end his own life. Main characters die painful deaths, and a child clings to a loved one's body.

Worth talking about

Logan has spent his life pushing people away, and Laura has only been taught to fight. What does the film suggest it takes to let someone in?
