A Star Is Born (2018): parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for language throughout, some sexuality/nudity and substance abuse.

A powerful but heavy romantic drama for older teens, ideally watched together. A famous rock singer with a serious drinking and drug problem helps a young songwriter become a star while his own life falls apart. Swearing is constant, the couple has several sex scenes with brief nudity, and his addiction is shown in painful detail, including a humiliating public collapse and a stay in rehab. He describes a suicide attempt he made as a child, and a main character later dies by suicide off screen. The suicide, the addiction and the sexual content are why we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Little physical violence: a few punches, including one a woman throws at a man pestering the singer and a fight between brothers. A character recalls trying to hang himself as a boy, and a main character later dies by hanging, off camera.

Language

Strong

Strong language in nearly every scene. One count found more than 100 f-words and about 20 s-words, plus ass, bitch, piss and frequent misuse of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Frequent kissing and several sex scenes, in bed and in a bathtub, showing bare backs and the sides of breasts; two reviews note a brief fully nude shot of the woman. A drag performer flirts and shows fake breasts.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Addiction is central. The lead drinks heavily, often from the bottle, and passes out; he snorts crushed pills and other drugs, smokes marijuana and wets himself while drunk at an awards show before going to rehab. Others drink and smoke.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

No horror, but the lead's drunken behavior is upsetting, including cruel words to his wife and a humiliating public scene. The suicide and the grief that follows are emotionally intense.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Addiction

Worth talking about

The film shows how addiction and depression hurt both the person and the people who love them. Why can asking for help feel so hard, and who could someone in that spot turn to?
