Rocketman: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for language throughout, some drug use and sexual content.
A flashy, fantasy-tinged musical biopic of Elton John for older teens and adults, and a frank look at addiction. Expect nearly 30 f-words and slurs for gay men, cocaine snorting, pills, heavy drinking, bulimic vomiting, and a suicide attempt in which he swallows pills with vodka and plunges into a pool. A sex scene between two men shows brief movement and nudity from the side and behind, and oral sex is implied. Cold, rejecting parents and a manager who punches him add pain, but the ending is hopeful, with recovery. Best for about 16 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateJohn's manager and lover punches him in the face, leaving bruises he hides with makeup. John falls down stairs, throws chairs, and in a suicide attempt swallows pills with vodka and falls into a pool. A stylized brawl number.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted nearly 30 f-words (Movieguide's overall tally runs higher), at least a dozen s-words and one c-word, plus slurs for gay men such as 'f-g' and 'poofter,' some used by John about himself.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTwo men undress and have sex in a brief scene, seen from the side and behind with brief nudity. Oral sex is implied, a stylized orgy number shows writhing, scantily dressed dancers, a boy sees his mother having sex in a car, and a fantasy scene strips John nearly nude.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongConstant heavy drinking, cocaine snorted in large amounts, prescription pills, and joints and bongs at parties. A drunk man drives. Addiction is central and shown as destructive, and John ends up in rehab and sober.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateA suicide attempt and hospital scene, drug binges, bulimic vomiting, and a lonely boy rejected by his father are upsetting, though the fantasy musical staging softens some moments.

Worth talking about
Elton only begins to recover once he admits how badly he wanted his parents' love. Ask your teen how loneliness and fame fed his addiction, and what finally helped him.
