Band of Brothers: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A landmark 10-part HBO war drama for older teens and adults, following a real U.S. paratrooper company from training through D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and the end of World War II in Europe. The combat is realistic and bloody, characters viewers have come to know are killed or maimed without warning, and one episode shows the liberation of a concentration camp, with starving prisoners and bodies. Swearing is constant, one late episode has a brief sex scene with nudity, and an officer drinks heavily. It is powerful history, but the gore and intensity put it at 16, ideally watched together.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic combat in nearly every episode: soldiers are shot, blown up and burned, with bloody wounds and lost limbs. Prisoners are shot in cold blood, a teenage enemy soldier is killed, a camp commandant is executed, and a drunk GI shoots a sergeant.
Language
StrongFrequent f-words and s-words in every episode, plus 'hell,' 'damn,' crude military songs and slurs for German soldiers.
Sex and nudity
ModerateLittle sexual content overall. One late episode has a brief sex scene under a blanket between a soldier and a German woman, showing her breasts and his bare buttocks.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongSoldiers smoke and drink constantly, and victory celebrations turn drunken. One officer is a functioning alcoholic always hunting for liquor, and the series shows the toll it takes. Medics give wounded men morphine.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained, chaotic battle scenes, shelling of frozen foxholes and sudden deaths of familiar characters. The concentration camp episode shows emaciated survivors and many corpses, and a traumatized soldier temporarily loses his sight.

Worth talking about
The men are ordinary young volunteers facing terrible choices. Why do you think the series shows both their courage and darker moments, like the killing of prisoners?
