Uncut Gems: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for pervasive strong language, violence, some sexual content and brief drug use.

A frantic, nerve-shredding crime drama for older teens and adults about a New York jeweler whose gambling addiction drags him into deeper trouble. Content is heavy across the board: hundreds of f-words and frequent use of the n-word, beatings and two point-blank shootings with blood spatter, a woman briefly touching herself in lingerie, implied sex, and a music star snorting cocaine in a club. The constant shouting and stress can be exhausting, and the lead lies to and cheats on nearly everyone. The pervasive language and violence are why we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent fights with slapping, biting and beatings, with some blood. Two people are shot in the head at point-blank range, with spatter and a close-up wound. A man is dangled by his ankles from a window, and liquor poured into a fish tank kills the fish.

Language

Strong

Relentless. Plugged In counted about 700 profanities, including nearly 500 f-words, more than 60 s-words and about 30 uses of the n-word, plus insults aimed at women and others.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A woman in lingerie, buttocks showing, sends explicit photos and briefly touches herself under her underwear. Couples kiss, undress and have implied sex, a man is stripped with nothing explicit shown, and in a club a woman touches a man's crotch over his clothes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Two people, one a real-life music star, snort cocaine in a club bathroom with no consequences. People drink heavily in a club and take shots at a bar, and characters smoke cigars and cigarettes.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

No horror, but nonstop tension as enforcers threaten the lead and his family. Sudden shootings near the end are shocking, and close-up colonoscopy footage and a leg wound with exposed bone may upset some viewers.

Sensitive topics

  • Addiction
  • Animal death

Worth talking about
