Black Summer: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A raw, fast-moving zombie series for older teens, darker and more chaotic than most of the genre. A mother separated from her daughter on the first day of the outbreak fights her way across a collapsing city, and season 2 follows them through a brutal winter. The zombies sprint, and humans are often worse: executions, gunfights, a gang of teen boys who kill a captive, and a guard who threatens a woman sexually. Swearing is frequent and strong, and season 2 deals repeatedly with suicide. A father is shot after turning in the first episode, so we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongBloody, frequent violence with guns, knives, bats and cars, including a zombie's face bashed in with a hammer, a group beating a man and feeding him to zombies, and teens executing a captive. Sexual violence: in season 1 a guard assaults a captive woman, with clear sexual threat.
Language
StrongFrequent uncensored f-words and s-words, plus motherf---er, bitch and hell, across both seasons. Characters swear constantly in moments of panic.
Sex and nudity
ModerateRomance is minimal. The UK classifier flagged brief sexual content and sex references in two season 1 episodes, but no explicit scenes or nudity are reported.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildNot a focus. Liquor turns up among scavenged supplies in season 2; no drug use or drunkenness is reported in either season.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongRelentless panic, sprinting zombies and sudden deaths. A girl's father turns and is shot, two dying men ask to be killed (one asks a teen girl), and a mother tries and fails to shoot herself in the season 2 finale.

Worth talking about
Strangers in the show often have to decide fast whether to trust each other. How do you judge whether someone is safe to trust, and when has a first impression fooled you?
