Parks and Recreation: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A warm, optimistic workplace sitcom about small-town government that most families with young teens can enjoy together. The tone is kind and the lead is a relentless do-gooder, but the jokes lean adult: frequent sexual innuendo, talk of hookups and one-night stands, blurred comic nudity and an episode set in a strip club. Characters drink at work events and sometimes get drunk for laughs, and stronger swear words are bleeped. Violence is limited to slapstick. Some episodes carry a TV-PG, others TV-14, and 13 fits most kids who can shrug off the innuendo.
What's in it
Violence
MildSlapstick falls, a child whacking a grown man in the groin with a toy bat, and a few infrequent punches. Characters make exaggerated threats, but nobody is seriously hurt and nothing graphic is shown.
Language
MildAudible words include hell, damn, crap, bitch and douchebag, plus misuse of God's name. Stronger profanity is bleeped, sometimes as the joke itself, so the intended word is often clear.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrequent innuendo, jokes about hookups and coworkers with benefits, and implied one-night stands. A man walks naked down a street with his body blurred or covered, and one episode takes place inside a strip club. Birth control comes up in conversation.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateCharacters drink socially and at work celebrations, sometimes ending up drunk; one episode features a potent homemade cocktail that gets a whole party wasted. An underage intern is shown drinking wine on video, and pills are mentioned as a joke.
Scary or intense scenes
MildVery little peril. The most upsetting moment for younger kids may be the death of a beloved miniature horse and the town memorial that follows, which the show handles with gentle humor.
Sensitive topics
- Animal death
