Notting Hill: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sexual content and brief strong language.
A warm, witty romantic comedy that young teens and parents can enjoy together. A shy London bookseller falls for the world's biggest movie star, and the two try to date while photographers swarm. Nothing graphic appears on screen, but the couple sleep together off camera, a tabloid scandal over old nude photos drives part of the plot, and the hero's roommate is crude about sex. There are some s-words and an f-word or two, plus wine, a little drunkenness and smoking. It suits about 13.
What's in it
Violence
NoneNo fights or injuries. The closest moments are a frantic, reckless car dash across London and a man stepping into traffic to stop a car.
Language
ModerateOccasional s-words, 'dick,' 'crap,' 'ass' and 'damn,' an f-word or two and religious exclamations. The roommate wears a T-shirt with a crude f-word come-on, and sexual double meanings pop up.
Sex and nudity
ModerateThe leads sleep together off screen, with only morning-after shots. Nudity is limited to a brief, obscured view of the star's bare back and the roommate's partly bared rear in his briefs. Crude talk about breasts and a scandal over her old nude photos.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateWine at dinner parties, some tipsiness and cigarette smoking by a few characters. No drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
NoneNothing scary. The tension is all romantic: heartbreak, embarrassment and the stress of being hounded by the press.
Worth talking about
The film pokes at how tabloids treat famous people. Talk about whether celebrities deserve privacy, and how a leaked photo can follow someone for years.
