Toy Story: parents' guide

5+our pick

Best for ages 5 and up. Rated G.

A funny, warm Pixar classic that works for most young children, with a few scary scenes worth knowing about. A cowboy doll gets jealous when a flashy new space toy becomes his owner's favorite, and the two end up lost together. The scariest part is the neighbor boy Sid, who blows up and takes apart toys, and his dim bedroom full of patched-together mutant toys. A dog chases the heroes, and there are tense rescues. Language is limited to insults, and nothing else is a concern. Age 5 reflects Sid's scenes; many younger kids will be fine with a parent nearby.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Cartoon toy violence, mostly played for laughs: Woody and Buzz brawl, Buzz's arm breaks off in a fall, and Sid blows up a toy soldier, swaps doll heads and tries to burn Woody with a magnifying glass. No injury detail.

Language

Mild

Very mild: name-calling such as idiot, stupid, creep and dirtbag, plus heck and screwy. One guide also lists an infrequent damn.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Bo Peep flirts with Woody and kisses him, leaving lipstick marks, and a spelling toy types hubba hubba when Mrs. Potato Head appears. One of Sid's mutant toys has bare plastic doll legs.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No one drinks or smokes. Sid's dad is seen asleep near beer cans, and a Buzz Lightbeer joke and a tipsy-acting Buzz at a tea party are played as gags.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Sid's dim bedroom holds eerie hybrid toys, such as a baby doll head on spider legs, that creep out in a jump-scare moment before turning out to be friendly. A snarling dog chases the toys, and a moving-truck chase is tense.
