Zootopia: parents' guide
Best for ages 7 and up. Rated PG for some thematic elements, rude humor and action.
A smart, fast-moving buddy comedy for families with kids around 7 and up, in which a rabbit police officer and a con-artist fox investigate disappearing predators in a city of animals. Expect chases, a train crash and explosion, a mob boss who threatens to "ice" the heroes, and several jump-scare moments when predators turn savage and attack. Both leads are bullied as kids in flashbacks, and a nudist-club scene shows fur-covered animals with nothing visible. The story tackles prejudice through animal stereotypes, which gives older kids a lot to unpack. The sudden attacks are why we suggest 7.
What's in it
Violence
MildAnimals gone savage lunge and tear at their surroundings, a jaguar chases the heroes, a train car crashes and explodes, and a young fox scratches a bunny's cheek. Judy cuts her leg in a fall and can't run. A school play fakes blood with ketchup.
Language
MildNo curse words. Two "oh my god" exclamations, a few uses of heck and darn, one "cripes," and frequent name-calling like dumb, jerk, loser and moron.
Sex and nudity
MildJudy visits a club of nudist animals; they're fur-covered with nothing shown, but she is mortified. A pop-star gazelle wears revealing outfits and dances suggestively, and some jokes are aimed at adults.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildNo drinking or smoking. The villain's plot uses darts loaded with a flower-based serum that makes predators go wild, brewed in a hidden lab that spoofs a drug lab, and a mellow yak plays like a stoner.
Scary or intense scenes
ModeratePredators who "go savage" attack with little warning, producing several jump scares, and dark scenes among caged, snarling animals are tense. A trusted friend appears to turn on Judy, which can upset young viewers.

Worth talking about
The city's fear of predators works like real-world prejudice. Where did the characters' assumptions come from, and how does Judy have to face her own?
