Puss in Boots: The Last Wish: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for action/violence, rude humor/language, and some scary moments.

A funny, gorgeously animated fairy-tale adventure for school-age kids that is darker than it looks, because it is really about the fear of dying. Puss learns he is on the last of his nine lives and is hunted by a whistling, red-eyed wolf who turns out to be Death itself, menacing enough to frighten younger children. Expect lots of sword fights, comic deaths in flashback, a villain who carelessly gets his own henchmen killed, and Puss having panic attacks. Language is mild, with a few bleeped words. The scary villain and the death theme are why we suggest 8.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Near-constant sword fights, explosions and falls. Puss dies in an early slapstick scene, and flashbacks replay earlier comic deaths. The wolf cuts Puss with curved blades, a henchman is stripped to a skeleton by a plant, and others plunge into a canyon.

Language

Mild

Hell, crap, bugger, butt and freaking, a cut-off 'bull...', and a string of bleeped words during a trading of insults. Potty jokes include a litter-box gag and an escape through an outhouse.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Puss and Kitty Softpaws flirt and work through an old romance that fell apart at the altar. Nothing beyond affection, and no nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

In one of his past deaths, replayed in flashback a couple of times, Puss stumbles around a bar tipsy on milk, played for laughs. He also laps up cream at a bar and gulps coffee mid-fight.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The wolf stalks Puss with a chilling whistle and repeated attacks, and Puss is so shaken by his mortality that he has panic attacks. A little dog's cheerful story of being abandoned by his owner is dark under the jokes.

Worth talking about

Puss realizes he took his lives for granted and that leaning on friends takes more courage than going it alone. What makes a life feel well lived?
