Star Wars: The Force Awakens: parents' guide

10+our pick

Best for ages 10 and up. Rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence.

A fast, crowd-pleasing return to the galaxy that works well for tweens and confident younger fans. There's a bit more blood than in the originals, though still not much: a dying stormtrooper smears bloody handprints on a helmet, villagers are gunned down on orders, and prisoners are tortured with the Force. Creatures eat people in a ship's corridors, a planetary system is destroyed, and a beloved main character, a parent, is killed on screen. Language is limited to a few uses of "damn" and "hell," and romance is hugs and a forehead kiss. We suggest 10 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Many blaster and lightsaber deaths, mostly bloodless, plus a village massacre, bloody handprints on a helmet, a bleeding head wound and a lightsaber stab through the body. Planets are destroyed, and a creature's tentacles are severed in a closing door.

Language

Mild

By one count a single "damn" and two uses of "hell," plus insults such as "scum" and "little freaks."

Sex and nudity

None

No romance beyond an affectionate hug between former partners, hand holding while fleeing and a kiss on the forehead.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Aliens drink, presumably alcohol, in Maz Kanata's castle cantina. No smoking, drunkenness or drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Kylo Ren's masked menace, mind-probing torture, tentacled creatures grabbing and eating crew members, and the on-screen killing of a beloved character in a family confrontation can be upsetting. Dead soldiers and villagers are briefly shown.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Finn walks away from the only life he has known because he won't kill innocent people. Talk about how hard it is to say no to a group you belong to.
