Monty Python and the Holy Grail: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG.
A classic absurdist comedy that families with tweens and teens tend to quote for years, though younger kids will miss most of the wordplay. King Arthur and his knights wander medieval England in search of the Grail, meeting a knight who loses every limb, a killer rabbit and a castle full of eager maidens. The blood is bright and fake, and the fights end in silly dismemberments. Bawdy jokes include young women asking to be spanked and an 'oral sex' punchline, and animated scenes show bare bottoms. The language is mild by today's standards apart from an s-word and one cruder word. The sex jokes and comic gore are why we suggest 12.
What's in it
Violence
ModeratePlentiful but clearly fake: a knight loses all four limbs with blood spurting, throats are stabbed, a sword goes through a man's head, a wedding party is cut down, and a rabbit kills knights. A comic song lists absurd mutilations, including a passing sexual-violence reference.
Language
ModerateAn s-word and one use of 'pussy,' plus very British insults: 'bastard,' 'bloody,' 'bugger,' 'bitching,' 'piss,' 'sod,' 'git,' 'tart' and 'pansy.' 'Jesus Christ' is used as an exclamation.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo sex scenes. In Castle Anthrax, a crowd of young women, said to be 16 to 19, beg a knight to spank them, and the scene ends on an 'oral sex' punchline. Animated sequences show bare male bottoms, and innuendo pops up throughout.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildCharacters drink beer in passing, and no one is shown drunk. No smoking or drugs.
Scary or intense scenes
MildHardly scary: the killer rabbit and an animated beast that eats people are absurd, and a modern-day historian is abruptly cut down by a passing knight. Very young kids might be startled by the fake blood.
Worth talking about
The film mocks legends, authority and following orders without question. Why can silly humor be such an effective way to poke at power?
