Police Story: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for violence, brief sexual humor and drug content.

A breathless Jackie Chan cop movie that suits young teens who love stunts, about an honest Hong Kong officer guarding the key witness against a crime boss. The draws are jaw-dropping real stunts, a car chase through a hillside shantytown and a shopping mall brawl that shatters glass everywhere, with little blood. Expect gunfights, a police officer killed on a gangster's orders, seized drugs, a brief bare bottom and a few subtitled swear words. The PG-13 was given to edited US releases; the export cut runs about 13 minutes shorter than the original Hong Kong version. The intense fights and drug content suggest 13.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Frequent gun battles, hard-hitting martial arts fights and dangerous stunts, including falls through glass and a slide down a pole strung with lights. A police officer is killed on a crime boss's orders. Little blood, though the hero ends up battered and bloodied.

Language

Moderate

Infrequent: the subtitled version has about three swear words, including bastard, bulls--t and ass. English-dubbed versions also exist and may word things differently.

Sex and nudity

Mild

A character's bare bottom is seen in a shower scene, the witness spends one scene in lingerie and the hero's jacket, and there's flirting and innuendo. A comic phone routine mentions a rape and domestic abuse in passing.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

A character smokes a cigar, sealed packages of drugs are seized, a dealer tastes an unidentified powder, and a model poses as if smoking opium for a police photo shoot.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

More thrilling than scary. A masked home invasion starts out tense before turning comic, and there are hostage standoffs. One throwaway joke has a man saying his jealous girlfriend would hang herself. End-credit bloopers show stunt performers getting hurt for real.

Worth talking about

Jackie Chan and his team performed dangerous stunts for real, and the bloopers show people getting hurt. Talk about why kids should never try to copy movie stunts.
