One Piece: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A sprawling, funny and often moving pirate adventure that suits young teens who can handle a lot of fighting. With about 1,180 episodes, content varies by story arc, and the series grows darker as it goes: brutal battles with heavy bleeding, on-screen deaths of beloved characters, slavery and prejudice against a fish-like people, flashbacks to abused, orphaned and murdered children, and a dying man who takes his own life. One arc has an invisible villain grope a woman as she bathes. Sexualized humor is constant, smoking and drinking are everywhere, and an occasional f-word turns up. Age 13 fits most of it; later arcs hit hardest.
What's in it
Violence
StrongConstant fights with swords, guns and superpowers, from slapstick to brutal, with heavy bleeding in later arcs and major characters killed on screen. An invisible villain pins, gropes and licks a bathing woman, a sexual assault, then tries to force her to marry him.
Language
ModerateOccasional profanity in the dub and subtitles, including s-words, "asshole," "bastard," "bitch," "damn," "hell" and "crap," plus an occasional f-word. Crude insults are common.
Sex and nudity
ModerateSteady fan service: women in tiny tops, a cook who swoons and gets nosebleeds over every woman, a skeleton who asks women to show their underwear, bath scenes with nudity hidden by steam, and a gag where a woman flashes men to stun them.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateMain characters smoke cigarettes and cigars almost nonstop, and the crew drinks and parties often, sometimes getting drunk. In one arc a villain keeps kidnapped children compliant by feeding them drug-laced candy they become hooked on.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateZombies on a ghost island, grotesque villains and prison torture. Wrenching scenes include a mother figure shot before her young daughter, a brother dying in the hero's arms, a boy's little sister dying as his town is wiped out, and a girl stabbing her arm.

Worth talking about
The show plays one character's constant ogling and harassment of women as a running joke. Is it funny, and how would it feel to be the woman on the receiving end?
