Tremors: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13.

A rowdy, funny monster comedy for young teens, about two handymen and a tiny desert town besieged by giant underground worms. The scares are more thrilling than terrifying, but people are dragged into the ground, a dead man and a severed head are found, and the creatures burst in splashy goo. The bigger issue is language: near-constant swearing with many s-words and goddamns and one f-word. Expect some beer drinking and light flirting. The steady profanity plus the creature deaths are why we suggest 13.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Giant worms drag people underground, killing a shepherd and his sheep, two road workers and several townspeople, mostly off screen. A severed head and bloody sheep carcasses are found. The creatures are shot, blown up and splattered in goo, with little human blood.

Language

Moderate

Frequent swearing: one f-word, which survived edits made to avoid an R, plus many s-words and 'goddamn,' 'bastard,' 'ass,' 'asshole' and 'Jesus Christ.' Movieguide tallied about 150 crude or profane words overall.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Light flirting between a handyman and a visiting seismology student, ending in a kiss. Common Sense lists no nudity; Movieguide's summary mentions brief partial female nudity, but its own content chart says none. No sex scenes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Guides note only casual beer drinking by adults. No drunkenness or drug use is reported.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Frequent jump scares as tentacled worms burst from the ground and townspeople scramble onto rooftops and boulders. A child is nearly caught. The playful tone keeps it more exciting than disturbing.

Sensitive topics

  • Animal death

Worth talking about

The survivalist couple's huge gun collection saves them in one famous scene. Is the movie making fun of that lifestyle, celebrating it, or both?
