Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for terror/violence, disturbing images, thematic elements, language including racial epithets, and brief sexual references.

A genuinely frightening, well-made horror movie for teens who like to be scared, based on the classic book series. On Halloween 1968, small-town teens take a book from a haunted house, and new stories start writing themselves, each one coming true for one of them. Expect sustained terror, jump scares and nightmarish creatures, plus a pitchfork stabbing and grotesque body horror. A bully drinks and hurls racial slurs, there are about ten s-words and a possible f-word, and the ghost's backstory involves torture and suicide. Age 13 reflects the intensity of the scares rather than gore.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Mostly bloodless but intense: a bully is run through with a pitchfork and straw spills out, a corpse drags a boy under a bed, a creature built from body parts snaps a police chief's neck, and people are beaten, pulled by the hair and dragged across floors.

Language

Moderate

About ten s-words and one possible f-word, plus 'asshole,' 'damn,' 'hell,' 'goddamn,' 'turd' and frequent misuse of God's name. A racial slur aimed at a Latino teen is both spoken aloud and written out.

Sex and nudity

Mild

A boy's novelty pen shows a woman whose swimsuit slides away when tilted, though she is never fully bare. Teens flirt, and there are crude jokes about arousal and a character called a 'perv.'

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

A teen bully and his friends are drunk on Halloween night, slurring and smashing beer bottles, and one teen's mother asks whether he's drunk again.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained terror: a scarecrow comes to life, a pale, bloated woman slowly closes in on a boy, spiders burst from a girl's swollen cheek, and a jangling creature hunts the teens. Teens play a tape of a young woman screaming as she is given shock treatment, and she is said to have hanged herself.

Worth talking about

Ramón is treated as a suspect because of where he comes from, and Sarah was blamed for deaths she didn't cause. Talk about how towns turn outsiders into villains, and why it matters who gets to tell the story.
