Pitch Perfect: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sexual material, language and drug references.
A peppy college comedy about a women's a cappella group that most young teens enjoy, though its jokes are cruder than the singing suggests. Expect a steady stream of sexual innuendo, suggestive dance moves, frequent "bitch" (and its pun stand-in "pitch"), some s-words and one f-word noted by one guide. Students drink at parties and one gets visibly drunk, and there are two gross projectile-vomiting scenes. A lot of the comedy leans on Fat Amy's weight and on lesbian jokes about a teammate. The messages about teamwork and taking risks are solid, so it suits most kids from 13.
What's in it
Violence
MildComic scuffles only: a rivalry spat ends with a punch to the face, a guy is kicked in the crotch, a broken trophy sails through a window, and the Bellas brawl with each other, one getting hit with a burrito. No injuries shown.
Language
ModerateFrequent "bitch," often swapped for the pun "pitch," about half a dozen s-words, and one f-word listed by one guide. Also "ass," "hell," "d--k," crude insults like "slutbags," misuses of God's and Jesus' names, and a middle finger.
Sex and nudity
ModerateConstant innuendo, suggestive dancing (one Bella keeps groping herself) and a riff-off of songs about sex. Chloe barges into Beca's shower to recruit her; both are nude but seen only from the shoulders up. A couple's feet in one shower stall hint at sex. Kissing only.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateCollege students, freshmen included, drink beer from red cups at parties and one is visibly drunk. Jokes mention medical marijuana and crystal meth, and a rival singer's blank-out is blamed on pot.
Scary or intense scenes
NoneNothing scary. The most upsetting moments are gross rather than frightening: Aubrey projectile-vomits on stage and again in rehearsal, and another Bella rolls around in the mess.
Worth talking about
The film gets a lot of laughs from Fat Amy's size and from jokes about a lesbian teammate. Which jokes feel like characters owning who they are, and which feel like the movie punching down?
