Ready Player One: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action violence, bloody images, some suggestive material, partial nudity and language.
A fast, nostalgia-packed adventure that works best for teens and parents who love pop culture. A teen in a bleak 2045 hunts for clues hidden in a vast virtual world while a corporation's enforcers try to stop him in real life. Most fighting happens between game avatars that burst into coins, but a real-world bombing kills the hero's aunt and her neighbors. A long tribute to a classic horror film brings a blood-flooded hallway, ax-wielding zombies and a rotting nude woman. Expect one f-word, about a dozen s-words and some suggestive flirting. Age 13 fits the mix.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateHuge virtual battles with guns, bombs, monsters and car crashes, where defeated avatars shatter into coins. In the real world, enforcers shoot at teens, a woman is kicked from a moving van, and a bomb destroys a stack of homes with people inside.
Language
ModerateOne f-word and about a dozen s-words, plus asshole, bitch, damn, hell, douche bag and goddamn, a few slang words for male anatomy, and a crude gesture from a game character.
Sex and nudity
ModerateAvatars flirt and dance, and one caresses the hero's crotch area so that his full-body game suit lights up. A few kisses and brief innuendo. In the horror sequence, a naked woman climbs out of a bathtub, seen from behind down to the upper buttocks.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildWine glasses appear at an office party in a flashback, and an avatar holds a cigar. No drunkenness or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe horror-movie sequence brings a flood of blood, a decaying woman who attacks with an ax, and lurching zombies. A creature bursts from an avatar's stomach as a jump scare, and the real-world bombing is sudden and shocking.
Worth talking about
Talk about how much time in virtual worlds feels healthy, and what the hero gains once he starts valuing the friends he meets offline.
