Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle: parents' guide

12+our pick

Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for adventure action, suggestive content and some language.

A crowd-pleasing action comedy for tweens and up that mixes jungle peril with body-swap jokes. Four teens get pulled into a video game as adult avatars and must work together to escape. Avatars die in bloodless and sometimes comic ways before dropping back in with one fewer life, and animals lunge out in jump scares. The heaviest content is a running gag about a teen girl suddenly having male anatomy, plus a flirting lesson, a few s-words and one teen getting tipsy on margaritas. Age 12 suits the crude humor and peril.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Avatars are eaten by a hippo, trampled by rhinos, mauled by a jaguar and blown up, then respawn unhurt. Henchmen on motorcycles fire guns and rockets, and the villain has a scorpion sting one of his own men to death. Lots of game-style punching and kicking, no gore.

Language

Moderate

Three or four s-words, frequent ass and hell, a few damns and bitches, plus badass, dumbass, jackass, frickin' and about 15 uses of God's name as an exclamation.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Extended jokes about a girl in a man's avatar discovering a penis, including peeing standing up and an implied erection. A lesson in flirting to distract guards, ogling of a shirtless hero, a crude line about hitting that, and a couple of kisses. No nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Teens in adult avatar bodies try margaritas; two spit them out, and one gets tipsy. A flashback shows the villain drinking hard.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Jump scares from a jaguar and a striking snake, stampeding animals, and a villain who controls insects, with a millipede crawling into his ear and a scorpion emerging from his mouth. A character down to his last life faces real danger.

Worth talking about

Ask how each teen's avatar pushes them to see themselves differently, and what they learn from working with people outside their usual group.
