Dune: Part Two: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some suggestive material and brief strong language.
An epic, grim science-fiction war film for teens who can handle long battle sequences and a slow-burning story. Paul Atreides joins the desert Fremen to take revenge on the house that destroyed his family, while a prophecy turns him into a feared messiah. Violence is frequent: stabbings, throat-slitting, flamethrowers burning bodies and nuclear blasts, with a few bloody wounds. A villain's arena games and a painful poison ritual are disturbing. Romance stays tame, language is sparse, and an addictive spice is central to the plot. Best for about 13 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateNear-constant combat with blades, futuristic guns, explosions and atomic weapons. A villain kills two women to test a blade, heads are smashed, corpses are burned with flamethrowers, and a captive is speared in an arena. Some blood, little gore.
Language
ModerateSparse: Plugged In heard two s-words and one possible f-word, and the rating cites brief strong language. Otherwise 'hell,' 'piss,' 'moron' and a villain repeatedly calling the Fremen rats.
Sex and nudity
ModeratePaul and Chani kiss and share a bed with bare shoulders and heavy breathing, implying intimacy. A Bene Gesserit woman seduces a villain to conceive a child, and sex and marriage are treated as political tools. No nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSpice, an addictive substance that grants visions, is central: the Fremen live with it and have blue eyes from it. A deadly ritual drug leaves a woman writhing in agony with a bloody nose. No alcohol or smoking.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateGiant sandworm attacks, a pale, bald killer and his eerie black-and-white arena, visions of famine and holy war, a hallucinatory poison ritual and a grotesque vomiting scene. The mood is dark and ominous throughout.
Worth talking about
Paul knows people see him as a savior and uses that belief to gain power. Ask your teen how leaders use faith or fear to win followers, and how to spot it.
