Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning: parents' guide

12+our pick

Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence and action, bloody images, and brief language.

A long, intense spy thriller that wraps up the franchise and works best for teens who know the earlier films. Ethan Hunt races to stop a rogue AI from setting off nuclear war, so the mood is grim, with frozen corpses in a sunken submarine, bloody fight aftermath such as a cleaver in a man's chest, and the death of a well-loved character. Gore is brief and mostly offscreen. Language is light, with an s-word and some milder words, and romance is a single kiss. We suggest 12 and up, mainly for the bloody moments and doomsday stakes.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Shootouts, knife fights and brutal brawls, with brief spurts of blood and aftermath such as bodies in blood and a cleaver protruding from a man's chest. A wounded man has a tube pushed into his chest so he can breathe.

Language

Moderate

Sparse: "son of a bitch," "dickhead," "bastard," "ass" and "hell," plus at least one s-word listed by the BBFC. No f-words.

Sex and nudity

Mild

A single kiss. Ethan fights and swims in boxer briefs, and the camera catches some cleavage, but there is no sexual content.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

A character takes a swig of liquor as a makeshift painkiller, a clip from an earlier film shows beer, and heroes are injected with drugs that knock them out.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Doomsday dread as an AI threatens nuclear strikes, with images of nuclear blasts. Ethan nearly drowns escaping a sunken sub with frozen bodies, a captive woman is threatened with torture tools, and one character appears to bite a cyanide capsule and froths at the mouth.

Worth talking about

The villain wins by getting people to distrust each other. How can we tell when technology or misinformation is turning us against people we should trust?
