It Was Just an Accident: parents' guide
Best for ages 14 and up. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, violence, strong language, and smoking.
A tense, darkly funny Iranian thriller for mature teens, about former political prisoners who believe they have kidnapped the guard who tortured them and must decide whether to kill him. On screen the violence is rough but not gory: a man is hit with a shovel, nearly buried alive and slapped around while tied to a tree. The heavier material is spoken, as survivors describe torture in detail, including sexual assault of prisoners and a partner's suicide. Expect two f-words, many s-words and plenty of smoking. Those descriptions are why we suggest 14, with a parent nearby.
What's in it
Violence
StrongA captive is hit with a van door and a shovel, partly buried in the desert, then tied to a tree and slapped and kicked. Survivors describe past torture, including sexual assault, and a man says his fiancee killed herself; none is shown.
Language
ModeratePlugged In counted two f-words and 13 s-words in the subtitles, plus bastard more than 15 times. Ass, bitch, hell, son of a bitch, whore and pissed also turn up during the group's angry arguments.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex or nudity is shown. A woman vomits at a wedding and a man jokes about morning sickness, and a captive's underwear shows briefly while his prosthetic leg is checked. Sexual threats described in testimony are covered under violence.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSeveral characters smoke cigarettes throughout, and the kidnappers drug their captive to keep him unconscious. No drinking or recreational drug use was noted.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateLong stretches of tension as the group argues over killing a man who may be the wrong person, with an attempted live burial and a night interrogation. Survivors' torture accounts are harrowing, a dog is hit by a car in the opening, and the ending is unsettling.

Worth talking about
The survivors disagree about whether killing their former tormentor would be justice or just more of the same cruelty. Where would you draw that line, and why?
