Krampus: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of horror violence/terror, language and some drug material.
A horror comedy for teens who enjoy scares, not for kids who believe in Santa or frighten easily. A bickering family is hunted on Christmas Eve by Krampus and his monstrous toys, including a child-swallowing jack-in-the-box and nail-gun-wielding gingerbread men. Several family members, children among them, are dragged off or devoured, mostly with little blood, and the family dog seems to be eaten too. There are one or two f-words and about ten s-words. A teen holds a bong, an aunt gives tweens schnapps, and a mom is said to take Xanax. The dark, ambiguous ending can linger.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateMonsters attack, bite and drag people away, mostly with little blood, though a mauled leg bleeds and a man is shot with nails. The family fights back with guns, and a woman is briefly hung by Christmas lights before being cut down.
Language
ModerateOne or two f-words plus an interrupted one, about ten s-words, and "asshole," "bitch," "bastard," "dick" and "goddamn." God's and Jesus' names are misused often.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex or nudity. A married couple is affectionate, and an aunt makes crude jokes, including one about squirrels and their nuts, alongside talk of shotgun weddings.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateA teen shows off a Christmas-themed bong, an aunt spikes hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps and offers it to tweens, adults drink, and a mom is said to take Xanax.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained terror: children are stalked, kidnapped and swallowed by creatures, two are dropped screaming into a fiery pit, a grandmother's flashback shows her village dragged to the underworld, and the ending leaves the family's fate uncertain.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a child
Worth talking about
Max's angry wish sets everything off. Talk about how the family changes once they start protecting each other, and whether the ending felt hopeful or unsettling.
