Four Christmases: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for some sexual humor and language.
A brash romantic comedy for teens and adults rather than a family movie. A long-term couple spends Christmas Day visiting four divorced parents, and much of the humor comes from crude family dysfunction. Sexual content is the main concern: the couple has implied sex in a restroom stall, a grandmother and others make explicit jokes, a mother dates her son's old friend, and a boy of about 10 is seen from behind before stripping off camera. No nudity is shown. Language includes a few s-words, "asshole" and crude slang for female anatomy. Adults drink throughout, and brothers rough up the hero with cage-fighting moves played for laughs.
What's in it
Violence
MildPlayed for laughs: Brad's cage-fighter brothers kick, tackle and pin him, kids pile on adults in a bounce house, and Brad falls off a roof, yanking a TV into the air and starting a small fire.
Language
ModerateThree or four s-words, plus "asshole," "bitch" (once from a child), "hell," "damn," crude slang for female anatomy and around ten misuses of God's name.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA couple slips into a restroom stall for implied sex; the camera cuts away and they emerge disheveled. A grandmother jokes about her sex life, Kate mentions once flashing a bar by accident, and a boy is seen from behind before stripping off camera.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSocial drinking runs throughout, from a cocktail lounge to wine at dinner and beer on the roof, where a dad gripes about losing his buzz. People smoke in bars, and Brad's mom mentions her "special brownies."
Scary or intense scenes
MildNothing truly scary, but younger viewers may find the nonstop yelling and family conflict upsetting. Brad's fall from the roof and a baby's head bumping a wall are played as gags.

Worth talking about
Brad and Kate discover how little they knew about each other's families. Talk about what the movie gets right, and wrong, about family holidays and commitment.
