National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13.
A slapstick holiday comedy that many families watch every year, but its language, crude sex jokes and a brief nude fantasy make it a better fit for young teens than for kids. Clark Griswold's push for a perfect family Christmas unravels through falls, fires, a frantic squirrel and freeloading relatives. Expect one f-word and around a dozen s-words, adults drinking and smoking, a pet cat electrocuted in a gag, and frank jokes about who really fills the stockings, which may spoil Santa for young believers. The warm ending about family helps balance the chaos.
What's in it
Violence
MildMostly cartoonish slapstick: falls from ladders and the roof, a car wedged under a truck, a squirrel rampage, an explosion, a kidnapped boss and armed police. A cat chews a wire and is electrocuted, leaving a scorch mark.
Language
ModerateOne f-word and roughly eleven s-words, plus bitch, asshole, dick and frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names. A little girl repeats a crude phrase, and someone flips a middle finger.
Sex and nudity
ModerateClark flirts with a lingerie clerk and daydreams about her stripping at a pool, with a brief side view of a breast. Plenty of crude sexual jokes, a joke about a dog that humps, and a couple kissing in bed.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink beer, wine and eggnog and are shown drunk, cousin Eddie almost always has a beer, characters smoke cigarettes and cigars, and Clark's father jokes about leaning on Jack Daniel's to survive the holidays.
Scary or intense scenes
MildMild. A squirrel bursting out of the tree, Clark in a hockey mask wielding a chainsaw, and armed police storming the house are played for laughs but could startle small children.
Sensitive topics
- Animal death
Worth talking about
Clark wants a flawless Christmas and nearly misses the good parts. Ask what your family's must-have holiday moment is, and what actually makes it feel special.
