Scrooged: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13.

A dark, sarcastic Bill Murray comedy that updates A Christmas Carol around a cynical TV executive, best for teens. The humor leans on cruelty and shock: a man found frozen to death, a rotting ghost, a violent fairy, the hero trapped in a burning coffin, and a fired employee who returns with a shotgun. Language includes s-words, 'goddamn,' and 'son of a bitch' but no f-word. Expect sexual innuendo, a costume that partly exposes a dancer's breasts, heavy drinking, smoking, and a brief TV clip of a man injecting heroin. The closing message about kindness is sincere, but younger kids may find the ghosts and meanness too much.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A fired employee blasts a shotgun through the office and holds people hostage. A fairy ghost punches Frank and hits him with a toaster, a rotting zombie is shot with a handgun, and there are car crashes. Little blood is shown.

Language

Moderate

S-words, 'goddamn,' 'son of a bitch,' 'bastard,' 'bitch,' 'ass,' 'hell,' and 'p---y,' with 'Jesus' and 'Christ' as exclamations. No f-word: UK classifiers call the language moderate, and the guides we read list nothing stronger than s-words.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Innuendo throughout, including Kama Sutra jokes and talk of paying for women. A woman photocopies her bottom in panties, dancers wear revealing bodysuits, one costume partly shows a dancer's breasts, and a forced kiss is played for laughs.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Frequent drinking at work, parties, and restaurants, sometimes to drunkenness and reckless driving. Adults smoke, including a pregnant woman. Frank's TV promo briefly shows a man injecting heroin, and UK classifiers also note soft drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Grotesque imagery: a rotting ghost, detachable eyeballs, a skeletal Ghost of the Future with writhing souls inside its ribcage, a man found frozen to death, and Frank trapped in a coffin as it is cremated.

Worth talking about

Frank treats people as ratings and dollars until he sees what it costs him; teens can talk about how ambition can crowd out the people around them.
