Drag Me to Hell: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of horror violence, terror, disturbing images and language.
A gross-out horror ride for teens who like their scares with a wink: a bank loan officer refuses an old woman an extension and is cursed by a demon that will drag her soul to hell in three days. It's PG-13 but intense, with constant jump scares, a ghost who bites and chokes, maggots and fluids spewed onto faces, and the heroine sacrificing her pet kitten, which is killed offscreen but heard. The opening shows a boy pulled into a fiery pit, and the ending is bleak. Swearing is mostly mild apart from two s-words and one barely audible f-word. The relentless terror makes it a 13.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateA ghostly old woman bites, chokes and pummels the heroine, who fights back with a stapler and a ruler; an anvil dropped on the ghost pops her eyes out, a demon hurls people into walls, and blood gushes from a nose. More cartoonish than gory.
Language
ModeratePlugged In counted two s-words, and Common Sense notes one barely audible f-word. Otherwise frequent hell, plus damn, ass, bitch, pissed, whore and about 15 misuses of God's name.
Sex and nudity
MildKissing, a couple waking up fully clothed in the same bed, some cleavage and a wet T-shirt, and old book illustrations showing nude women. No sex scenes.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults drink wine at a family dinner, and two characters mention growing up with alcoholic parents. No drunkenness, smoking or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongRelentless jump scares and gross-out moments: a fly crawls into a sleeping woman's mouth, a shadowy goat-headed demon attacks, a séance turns violent, and a child is dragged into hell in the opening scene.
Sensitive topics
- Animal death
- Death of a child
Worth talking about
Christine denies the loan partly to impress her boss. Does her punishment fit what she did, and what do you make of the film turning a Romani woman into its villain?
