An American Werewolf in London: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R.

A horror comedy for older teens with strong stomachs: funny in places, but its werewolf attacks are bloody and its transformation scene is famously graphic. An American backpacker survives a mauling on the English moors, then keeps being visited by his dead, decaying friend, who urges him to kill himself before the next full moon. Expect a sex scene with bare breasts, full male nudity, f-words and a homophobic slur, nightmares in which a family is slaughtered, and a chaotic street massacre. A suicide attempt and a main character's violent death are also part of the story. The graphic gore plus the sex and nudity is why we say 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frenzied werewolf maulings with plenty of blood, a dead friend whose torn face decays further on each visit, nightmare killings that include bloodied children, a slit throat, pedestrians hit in a street pileup, and a police shooting.

Language

Strong

Plenty of strong language: f-words, s-words and a--hole, one use of the c-word, a homophobic slur, and British terms such as bloody.

Sex and nudity

Strong

A nurse and her patient kiss in the shower and then have sex, with bare breasts shown. A man wakes naked and runs nude through a zoo, with genitals briefly visible, and an adult film in a porn theater shows topless women.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Adults drink beer in a village pub and elsewhere. No drunkenness or drug use is reported by the guides we checked.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained horror: a stalking on fog-bound moors, a long and painful on-screen transformation, a corpse-like friend who keeps returning, a chase through a subway station, and nightmares of monsters in Nazi uniforms massacring a family. Jump scares throughout.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide

Worth talking about

David's undead friend keeps telling him the only way out is to end his own life. How do the people around David respond to his despair, and what would real help have looked like?
