The Best Horror Movies of the 2020s
Horror has had a remarkable run since 2020. Filmmakers who started on YouTube made some of its biggest hits, directors like Ryan Coogler and Robert Eggers brought blockbuster craft to the genre, and the best of it stood up to anything else in cinemas. These are the strongest horror films released since 2020, for anyone who has seen the classics and wants to know what they've missed.
The decade has two strong currents. One is horror with something on its mind: His House on what refugees carry with them, The Substance on aging, Sinners on music, faith and the Jim Crow South. The other is pure crowd-pleasing fright, built to make a full theater scream: Smile, Evil Dead Rise, Weapons. The very best, like Barbarian and Talk to Me, do both at once.
This is the hard stuff. Most of these are R-rated and several are extremely violent: When Evil Lurks and Bring Her Back are the deep end, and The Substance is the goriest. If you're easing in, start with Nope, Hokum or The Black Phone. For lighter scares, see Horror Comedies; for less blood, Scary Movies Without Gore; and for the films these all learned from, Classic Horror Movies.
Sinners
Movie · 2025Ryan Coogler's vampire film is also a blues musical, a gangster picture and a portrait of 1932 Mississippi. Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers opening a juke joint for one night, and the music sequence at its center is one of the great scenes of the decade. Bloody in its last act, with three sex scenes.
Weapons
Movie · 2025Seventeen children from one classroom run out of their homes in the middle of the night and vanish, and only one is left behind. Zach Cregger tells it in chapters, each from a different townsperson's point of view, swerving between dread, dark comedy and a finale audiences cheered. Some very nasty violence along the way.
Talk to Me
Movie · 2022The debut that announced a new horror voice. Two Australian brothers who made their name on YouTube turned a party game with a severed hand into a story about grief, peer pressure and the urge to feel anything at all. Fast, nasty and genuinely frightening. Their follow-up, Bring Her Back, is also on this list.
Barbarian
Movie · 2022A woman arrives at her Detroit rental late at night to find it double-booked, with a polite stranger already inside. That's all you should know. The film changes direction twice, sharply, and each turn is better than the last. Some gruesome sights and an underground sequence you'll remember, so it's not for the squeamish.
Nope
Movie · 2022Jordan Peele's UFO western. Two siblings who train horses for Hollywood productions notice something in the clouds above their California ranch, and decide to get it on camera. More spectacle than slasher, with long stretches of awe and dread, and its most upsetting scene is a flashback that has nothing to do with the sky.
The Substance
Movie · 2024Demi Moore plays a fading TV fitness star who injects a black-market drug that creates a younger, flawless version of herself, on strict conditions. A furious, funny satire of how the industry treats women's bodies, and the most extreme body horror on this list. Lots of nudity, and a finale that goes so far past gory it becomes absurd.
His House
Movie · 2020The decade's best argument that horror can carry real-world weight. A couple who survived the crossing from South Sudan are placed in a decaying English house, and the haunting is tangled up with the journey that brought them there. A debut from Remi Weekes, scary and political without ever lecturing. Short, too.
Longlegs
Movie · 2024Maika Monroe plays an FBI agent in the 1990s hunting a killer who leaves coded letters at the scenes of family murders, and Nicolas Cage, almost unrecognizable, plays the man himself. Built on dread rather than action: off-kilter framing, long silences, the sense that something is in the corner of the shot. Unsettling more than shocking.
28 Years Later
Movie · 2025Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return to the rage virus with a boy's first trip from his island village to the infected mainland, alongside his father. Stranger, sadder and more beautiful than you'd expect from a zombie sequel, with Ralph Fiennes in a remarkable role. Violent throughout, and its abrupt last turn leads straight into The Bone Temple.
Smile
Movie · 2022A therapist witnesses a patient's horrific death and starts seeing people smile at her in a way no one should smile. A studio horror film that is genuinely scary, built on relentless jump scares and a grim idea about trauma passing from person to person. Graphic suicide imagery throughout, so skip it if that's a sensitive subject.
The Invisible Man (2020)
Movie · 2020Elisabeth Moss plays a woman who escapes a controlling, wealthy partner, hears that he has killed himself, and then starts to feel she's being watched. Leigh Whannell turns the old Universal monster into a story about abuse and not being believed, and empty corners of rooms become terrifying. The shocks, when they come, are brutal.
Pearl
Movie · 2022A prequel to Ti West's X that stands entirely on its own. On a Texas farm in 1918, a young woman dreams of stardom while caring for her paralyzed father, and her sweetness curdles in front of you. Shot like a Technicolor musical, with Mia Goth giving one of the decade's great performances. Violent in sudden bursts.
Evil Dead Rise
Movie · 2023The Evil Dead moves from a cabin to a crumbling Los Angeles apartment block, where a single mother is possessed in front of her three children. The bleakest film in the series and one of the goriest, with almost none of the old slapstick, and a cheese grater scene audiences physically recoil from. Excellent if you can take it.
Late Night with the Devil
Movie · 2023Halloween night, 1977: a struggling talk-show host tries to rescue his ratings by bringing a possessed girl onto live television. It's presented as the recovered tape of the broadcast, commercial breaks and all, and David Dastmalchian is superb as the host. Slow to build, then wild and bloody in its last stretch.
Nosferatu (2024)
Movie · 2024Robert Eggers remakes the 1922 silent classic as a full gothic nightmare, with Lily-Rose Depp as the young wife the vampire wants and Bill Skarsgård buried under makeup as a Count Orlok who is genuinely repulsive. Gorgeous to look at, cold and candlelit. Includes nudity, sexual content and a great many rats.
Heretic
Movie · 2024Two young missionaries knock on the door of a charming, curious man, and Hugh Grant has rarely been better or more menacing. For an hour it's a debate about religion in a house that seems to shrink around them; then it turns into something nastier. Short on blood until late, long on conversation.
The Black Phone
Movie · 2021In 1978, a boy abducted by a masked child killer finds a disconnected phone on the basement wall, and it rings: the callers are the killer's earlier victims. Ethan Hawke is chilling behind a series of masks. More thriller than gorefest, but the violence is harsh: bloody schoolyard fights and a father beating his daughter with a belt.
Obsession (2025)
Movie · 2025A shy music-store clerk breaks a novelty wishing toy and wishes his coworker would love him. She does, completely, and it's the worst thing that could happen to either of them. Made cheaply by a YouTube filmmaker, it became one of 2026's biggest hits, and Inde Navarrette is astonishing. Very violent, with self-harm and an animal death.
Backrooms
Movie · 2026A furniture-store owner finds a doorway in his showroom's basement that opens onto an endless maze of empty yellow rooms, and his therapist is drawn in after him. Kane Parsons expands the web series he made as a teenager into a feature that's all atmosphere: humming lights, wrong-looking spaces, few explanations. Creepy rather than jumpy, with a couple of bloody moments.
Hokum
Movie · 2026Damian McCarthy's third film, after Caveat and Oddity, and his most accessible: a sour novelist, a remote Irish hotel and a sealed honeymoon suite the locals won't discuss. Old-school jump scares and folklore with a murder mystery underneath, and Adam Scott showing a nasty edge. A good one for a group.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Movie · 2026The second chapter picks up straight after 28 Years Later, splitting between a young survivor taken in by a tracksuited cult and a doctor attempting the impossible with one of the infected. Nia DaCosta directs, Ralph Fiennes is extraordinary again, and the cult scenes are brutal even by this series' standards. Its last scene sets up another chapter.
Together (2025)
Movie · 2025Dave Franco and Alison Brie, married in real life, play a couple who move to the countryside and find their bodies being pulled toward each other, literally. Body horror as relationship comedy: it's about codependency, and it manages to be both romantic and revolting. A date-night pick for couples with strong stomachs.
The Ugly Stepsister
Movie · 2025Cinderella from the other side: Elvira, the overlooked stepsister, puts herself through ever more brutal beauty treatments to win the prince. A Norwegian fairy-tale satire as funny as it is gross, with her pain played for both sympathy and squirms. Sexual content and graphic body horror; you'll know early on whether it's for you.
Bring Her Back
Movie · 2025The Philippou brothers' second film, and far darker than Talk to Me. Two step-siblings, one partially sighted, are placed with a cheerful foster mother still grieving her own drowned daughter, and Sally Hawkins makes her both pitiable and terrifying. Contains self-harm and some of the most stomach-turning scenes of the decade. The deep end.
When Evil Lurks
Movie · 2023In rural Argentina, two brothers find a man rotting from a demonic infection, and their attempt to get rid of him spreads it. The film's rules are clear and its violence is merciless, including toward children and animals. One of the most frightening films of the decade and one of the hardest to sit through. In Spanish.
