Pearl: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for some strong violence, gore, strong sexual content and graphic nudity.
A disturbing, darkly stylish prequel to X, made for adults and mature older teens. On a Texas farm in 1918, a young woman who dreams of stardom slowly unravels and turns murderous. The film is very bloody, with pitchfork and axe killings, dismemberment, a smothering and a woman badly burned. Sexual content is strong: an old stag film with full nudity and sex plays for close to a minute, the married lead has implied sex with a stranger, and she pleasures herself on a scarecrow. Swearing is minimal, but the gore, sexuality and violence against her own family put this at 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongBloody and shocking: a man is stabbed repeatedly with a pitchfork, a woman is hacked with an axe and dismembered, a mother is burned and left to die, a disabled father is smothered, a daydream shows a soldier exploding, and animals are killed and fed to an alligator.
Language
MildVery little swearing; the harshest word noted is "whore," along with insults like "stupid." The cruelty comes through cutting words between mother and daughter rather than profanity.
Sex and nudity
StrongA projectionist shows the lead an old stag film with full nudity and sex that runs close to a minute. She later wakes in his bed after implied sex, and she writhes on a scarecrow to orgasm. A bathing scene shows nothing graphic.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongThe lead swigs morphine straight from the bottle, and characters smoke cigarettes. Drug use is brief rather than a running thread.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongA slow, creeping descent into madness, with jump scares, a nightmare sequence, a rotting pig crawling with maggots, an alligator lurking in the pond, and decaying corpses posed at a table. The lead's long breakdown monologue is unnerving.
Sensitive topics

Worth talking about
Pearl is isolated, controlled by her mother and desperate for a different life. Talk about how loneliness and frustrated dreams can affect mental health, and healthy ways to cope with feeling trapped.
