Midnight Mass: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A slow, dialogue-heavy horror miniseries for older teens that turns brutal in its final episodes. A charismatic young priest arrives on a tiny fishing island, miracles begin, and the devout community heads toward catastrophe. Expect frequent f-words, teen pot smoking, alcoholism and recovery themes, prejudice against the Muslim sheriff, and the bloody memory of a teen girl killed by a drunk driver. Late episodes bring blood drinking, a church massacre, a poisoned communion that kills the congregation, a self-inflicted throat slashing and a town on fire. Dead cats and a poisoned dog add to the gloom. It is thoughtful about faith and grief, but we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongThe early episodes are quiet, but the last three get gory: a creature tears into people and drinks their blood, a church gathering becomes a massacre, people are shot and burned, and a mother slits her own throat. A dead teen appears bloodied in nightmares.
Language
StrongSteady profanity: Plugged In counted about 10 f-words and five s-words in the first episode alone, plus ass and misuse of Jesus' name, and Common Sense notes strong language throughout.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex scenes or nudity. A teen makes crude jokes about his brother's sex life, and a main character's pregnancy is part of the story.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongA main character is a recovering alcoholic haunted by the drunk-driving crash he caused, and recovery meetings recur. The town drunk struggles too. Teens smoke marijuana together, and adults drink.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongDread that builds to full horror: a beach strewn with mutilated cats, a winged creature, a congregation that dies and rises again, and a closing vigil of people awaiting death at sunrise. Long talks about death and the afterlife may stay with viewers.

Worth talking about
The series shows how faith can comfort people and also be twisted by leaders who claim to speak for God. Ask how the townspeople justify what they do, and who has the courage to stand against them.
