The Black Phone: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence, bloody images, language and some drug use.
A tense, frightening supernatural thriller for older teens, set in 1978, about a 13-year-old boy kidnapped by a masked child killer who gets help escaping through calls from the killer's earlier victims. There is no sex, but plenty to weigh: a father whips his daughter with a belt, schoolyard fights turn bloody, boys are murdered (mostly off screen) and an axe is driven into a man's head. Expect frequent strong language from kids and adults, slurs, and a scene of cocaine use. The children's mother died by suicide, and their father drinks heavily. The child-abduction theme and harsh violence are why we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongA father beats his young daughter with a belt in one long, harsh scene. A boy pummels a bully's face into a bloody mess, gangs of bullies kick other kids, a man is killed with an axe, someone is strangled, and ghostly victims show bloody wounds.
Language
StrongMovieguide counts about 28 obscenities, half or more of them f-words, many from kids, plus a c-word and c--ksucker. Slurs include an anti-Latino insult and an anti-gay slur, and there is a middle-finger gesture.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex or nudity beyond shirtless males, and only a sweet crush for romance. There are occasional crude sexual references in the kids' insults; the UK censor found no strong hint of sexual threat from the abductor.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongThe children's father is an alcoholic who drinks heavily and passes out among empty bottles, and a supporting character snorts cocaine. Adults also drink socially at a ballgame.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained dread as a boy is held in a soundproof basement by a masked killer, with jump scares, the ghosts of murdered boys and a captor who waits to beat him. A girl's dreams show the abductions.

Worth talking about
Finney survives with help from boys who didn't and a sister who never gives up. How does the courage the kids show compare with the bullies and the abusive father around them?
