Weapons: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong bloody violence and grisly images, language throughout, some sexual content and drug use.
A gripping but brutal horror mystery for older teens and adults. One night, every child in a third-grade class except one runs from home and vanishes, and the story follows the teacher, a grieving father and others trying to learn why. Suspense is the main draw, but bursts of gore are extreme, including a person torn apart and heads shot and smashed. Expect nearly 60 f-words, a rough sex scene without nudity, on-screen drug use and a lead who drinks heavily. The explanation is supernatural, and children are endangered and manipulated by an adult, which younger viewers may find especially upsetting. We suggest 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongExtreme in bursts: a person is torn apart in graphic detail, heads are shot with sprays of blood, a face is beaten to a pulp, a bewitched couple jab forks into their faces, and people are strangled, hit by a car and stabbed with syringes.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted nearly 60 f-words and more than 10 s-words, plus about 20 misuses of God's name, several of Jesus' name, and words like "a-hole" and "bitch."
Sex and nudity
ModerateA teacher and a police officer have a rough sex scene with thrusting and moaning but no nudity; he is cheating on his partner. Elsewhere there is kissing, a shirtless man, and talk of timing sex to conceive.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongA homeless addict smokes drugs from a pipe, uses needles, and breaks into cars to pay for his habit. The teacher buys vodka often, drinks alone and wakes up hungover, and a past drunk-driving arrest comes up.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained dread, with jump scares, a garishly made-up woman, eerie trances and children running into the night with arms outstretched. Parents and police turn into violent attackers, which can be especially upsetting for kids.

Worth talking about
When tragedy strikes, the town turns on a teacher with no evidence. Talk about how grief and fear push communities to look for someone to blame.
