The Night House: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for some violence/disturbing images, and language including some sexual references.

A tense, grief-soaked psychological horror film for older teens and adults: a teacher whose husband has just died by suicide starts hearing and seeing things in the lake house he built and uncovers disturbing secrets about him. Violence is brief but harsh, including women attacked and strangled and hidden bodies discovered, and the climax has a supernatural force urging the heroine to shoot herself. Strong language is frequent, there's a rear view of a nude man and some sexual talk, and the heroine drinks heavily. The focus on suicide and despair makes it a 16.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Brief but harsh: a man grabs a woman by the throat and smashes her head into a mirror, a woman is strangled in bed and thrown down stairs, and bloody crime scenes and plastic-wrapped corpses are shown. A gunshot suicide is discussed.

Language

Strong

Frequent strong language: Movieguide counted 19 obscenities, mostly f-words, including motherf-----, plus shit, bulls---, a--hole and Jesus Christ as an exclamation.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A man's bare buttocks are seen from behind. Passionate kissing with some undressing, sexual dialogue, talk of a husband's possible affairs and secret photos of women, and a man pinning a woman to a bed by the neck, with no rape implied.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The grieving heroine gets drunk at a bar and needs a ride home, then drinks wine and whiskey heavily at home. No drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Persistent dread for a woman alone at night: noises in the house, a shadowy presence that seems to be her late husband, an eerie sculpture of a woman pierced by spikes, and jump scares. In the climax she is nearly persuaded to end her life.

Worth talking about

Beth's grief leaves her convinced that nothing matters. How does the film portray depression, and where can someone turn when they feel that hopeless?
