Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for martial arts violence and some sexuality.
A sweeping, Oscar-winning martial arts romance that suits thoughtful young teens comfortable with subtitles. Warriors chase a stolen sword across Qing-era China in gravity-defying fights on rooftops and treetops that are mostly bloodless, though several characters die, one from a blade to the forehead and another from a poisoned dart. A long desert flashback includes a passionate romance with sex implied but not shown, and a woman's wet shirt reveals her nipples. The ending is tragic, and one character's final leap can be read as suicide. Age 13 reflects the implied sex and the sad, ambiguous finale.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFrequent, elaborate sword, spear and hand-to-hand fights, mostly without blood. A thrown blade lodges in a man's forehead, a warrior dies from a poisoned dart, and bandits raid a desert caravan in flashback.
Language
MildAlmost none. A young woman is spitefully called a "whore" once; otherwise the subtitled dialogue is clean.
Sex and nudity
ModerateIn a desert flashback, two lovers kiss while lying down and sex is clearly implied, with no nudity, and the romance has several passionate moments. In another scene a woman's soaked shirt shows her nipples.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildWine is drunk in one scene, and a villain uses burning incense to drug a young woman. No other drinking or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateIntense duels and the deaths of major characters, including a slow death by poison, bring real grief. The ending is sad and open to interpretation, as one character leaps from a great height in what may be suicide.
