Man on Wire: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for some sexuality and nudity, and drug references.

A thrilling, heist-style documentary about Philippe Petit's illegal 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers, best for teens. Most of it is planning, suspense and joy, with no violence and almost no swearing. The PG-13 comes from one sped-up reenactment after his arrest in which Petit and a fan undress and embrace on a bed, with bare breasts, bare buttocks and a very brief, grainy glimpse of full-frontal nudity, plus cigarette smoking throughout and a helper saying he was high on marijuana during the walk. That scene is the main reason we suggest 13.

What's in it

Violence

None

No violence. Petit is arrested and led away by police after the walk, without force.

Language

Mild

Almost none. One detailed guide counted a single mild obscenity; others report no profanity at all.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

One short, sped-up reenactment shows Petit and a female fan undressed on a bed after his release, implying sex: bare breasts, bare male buttocks and a very brief, grainy glimpse of full-frontal nudity. No explicit sexual activity is visible.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Cigarette smoking throughout. One of the planners says he smoked marijuana for decades and was high during the planning and the walk itself.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Real suspense about falling from a huge height, with talk of death as a constant risk. The towers' later destruction is never mentioned but may weigh on some viewers.

Worth talking about

Petit broke the law and risked his life to create something beautiful. Is a stunt like this brave, reckless, or both, and does the art justify the risk?
