The Killer (2023): parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong violence, language and brief sexuality.
A cold, precise hit-man thriller from David Fincher that suits older teens and adults. After a job goes wrong, Michael Fassbender's assassin hunts down the people who attacked his girlfriend, and the film lingers on his methods. Violence is the main concern: several shootings with spraying blood, a slow death from a nail gun, a snapped neck and one savage hand-to-hand fight. Strong language turns up throughout, and a couple is glimpsed having sex through a window, with a man's bare backside shown. The strong, sometimes graphic violence is why we suggest 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongMany people are shot dead, some with spraying blood, starting with a bystander hit by mistake. A man is shot with a nail gun and dies slowly, a woman's neck is snapped, a house is firebombed, and a long, savage fight involves fists, a blade and a fireplace poker.
Language
StrongStrong words are scattered through the film rather than constant, including f-words, 'motherf---er' and 's--t,' with 'Jesus f---ing Christ' used as an exclamation. 'Oh my God' also comes up.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrom a distance, through a window, the killer watches a couple having sex; the man's bare rear can be seen. A sex worker gets ready for a client, and the killer's chest and backside are briefly visible while he changes clothes.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildOne woman throws back several glasses of Scotch, and whiskey is poured in other scenes. The killer knocks out a guard dog with sleeping pills, and a liquor bottle becomes a firebomb. No drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateLong stretches of quiet suspense with a detached narrator who kills methodically. A frightened woman bargains with him before she is killed, a beaten woman lies in a hospital bed, and a nighttime home invasion turns savage.
Worth talking about
The killer keeps telling himself he follows strict rules, then breaks them. What does the film suggest about people who believe they are always in control?
