The Big Short: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for pervasive language and some sexuality/nudity.

A smart, angry and darkly funny drama about the 2008 financial crash, best for older teens interested in money, economics or how big systems fail. It follows a few outsiders who bet against the housing market, with actors stepping out of the story to explain the finance. The language is relentless, with roughly 100 f-words, and two strip club scenes show topless or nearly nude dancers. One character is haunted by his brother's suicide, and a flashback shows the brother on a ledge but not the death. There is drinking and smoking but no illegal drug use. The pervasive language, nudity and suicide put it at 16.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

No fights. A man's suicide is glimpsed in a brief flashback just before he jumps from a building, and an alligator lunges at visitors from a backyard pool. Characters shout and argue over money.

Language

Strong

Constant strong language. One count found about 100 f-words and 50 s-words, plus prick, bitch, ass and frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names. One man talks crudely about a deformity on his genitals.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Two strip club scenes: one dancer is nearly naked with bare breasts while talking to a client, and others wear thongs and pasties, baring backsides. Sex between a banker and a job seeker is implied, and an actress explains finance from a bubble bath.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Lots of drinking at bars, casinos and celebrations, and characters smoke cigarettes and cigars. One man is told to raise his antidepressant dose and take anti-anxiety pills. No illegal drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

No scary scenes, but one character's intense grief over his brother's suicide runs through the film, and it ends on the human toll of the crash: lost homes, lost jobs and upended lives.

Worth talking about

The heroes make fortunes by betting that ordinary people will lose their homes. Can you profit from a disaster you saw coming and still be in the right?
