Dumb Money: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for pervasive language, sexual material, and drug use.

A fast, funny true story about the 2021 GameStop stock frenzy, best for older teens curious about money and markets. Small investors rallied by a YouTuber take on Wall Street hedge funds, and much of the movie is online chatter, family banter and pandemic-era stress. Swearing is nearly nonstop, with more than 100 f-words. There is also crude sexual talk, a party game with sexual touching, two brothers running naked seen from behind, and a character who smokes marijuana from a bong in several scenes. Almost nothing is violent or scary. We suggest 15 for the language, sexual material and drug use.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Almost none. A young woman cuts her foot on broken pottery and a little blood shows through her sock. There is shouting, a hedge fund manager has a panic attack, and death threats are mentioned.

Language

Strong

Close to constant. Plugged In counted more than 100 f-words and about 50 s-words. Also motherf--ker, crude words for genitals, the n-word (some in song lyrics), the slur retard in online posts, and rude gestures.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

During a college party game, one young woman puts her hand inside another's pants. Two brothers run naked at night, with bare bottoms briefly seen. A same-sex couple kisses in bed, and online comments are sexually crude.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

One brother smokes marijuana from a bong in several scenes, and college students share a joint. Adults drink beer, wine and champagne, a campus party has heavy drinking, and a character pretends to snort his phone like cocaine.

Scary or intense scenes

None

Nothing scary. The tension is financial: ordinary families risk their savings, characters fear losing jobs, and the story plays out during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Worth talking about

Many of the small investors bought GameStop partly to strike back at big hedge funds. Is it wise to invest based on online hype, and who really won and lost money in the end?
