Bottoms: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for crude sexual content, pervasive language and some violence.
A raunchy, absurd high school comedy for older teens, about two unpopular queer girls who start a so-called self-defense club, really a fight club, to get close to the cheerleaders they like. Nearly everything is played for laughs, but the content is heavy: more than 90 f-words and homophobic slurs, constant crude sex talk, make-outs in underwear, sex implied off screen, and cartoonishly gory brawls that end with students killed on a football field. Jokes touch on sexual assault, a student's suicide and blowing up the school. One character smokes what may be a joint. Best for 16 and up.
What's in it
Violence
StrongClub members trade punches that leave bloody lips, black eyes and broken noses. The finale is a gory melee in which a football player is run through with a sword and another's head bursts in blood after a kick. A car is blown up.
Language
StrongPervasive: one review counted more than 90 f-words, 30 s-words and two c-words, plus about 15 misuses of God's name, crude terms for anatomy and a homophobic slur scrawled on the main characters' lockers.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo live nudity, though a painted mural shows a classmate fully nude. Teen girls kiss, sometimes in bed in their underwear, and two are implied to have sex off screen. A boy is heard having sex with a classmate's mother. Crude sex talk is constant.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateOne brief moment: a side character smokes something that could be a big cigar or a marijuana blunt. No drinking or other drug use is reported.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateMostly too silly to scare, but the bloody climax kills several students on screen, a character talks about wanting to bomb the school, and another vows to kill her stepfather. The comic tone softens it.
