Anyone but You: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for language throughout, sexual content and brief graphic nudity.

A raunchy R-rated rom-com for older teens and adults, much racier than its breezy trailers suggest. Two people who can't stand each other fake a romance at a destination wedding in Australia, in a loose update of Much Ado About Nothing. The heart of it is sweet, but there is a steamy sex scene, topless women, comic male nudity that includes a brief genital glimpse, nearly 70 f-words by one count, and adults smoking a joint. Violence and scares are minor. The sex, nudity and drug use are why we suggest 16 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Very little. There is one slap, Bea hits Ben in the crotch, and the two fall overboard on a boat trip and fear drowning or sharks before they get back to safety.

Language

Strong

Constant: one count found nearly 70 f-words, more than 15 s-words, frequent 'bitch,' 'ass' and 'dick,' a c-word, and about 20 misuses of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Strong

A steamy sex scene starts in the shower, showing bare breasts and backsides but not genitals. Women are topless in a couple of scenes, Ben spends a long comic scene naked with only his hands covering him, and a man's penis is briefly seen.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Adults drink throughout the wedding festivities, a few people smoke a joint on screen, and harder drugs, including cocaine, are mentioned.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Mild. The overboard scene, with fears of drowning and sharks, is the tensest moment, and it resolves quickly. Otherwise the drama is bickering and family meddling.

Worth talking about

Bea and Ben spend most of the movie pretending: what does the story suggest about why people hide what they really feel, and what that costs them?
