Once: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated R for language.

A gentle, low-key indie musical for teens who can handle a lot of casual swearing. Over one week in Dublin, a street musician and a Czech immigrant who sells flowers bond over writing and recording songs together. The film is warm and respectful, with no violence, sex or nudity. The one real issue is language: f-words come up often, mostly as everyday slang rather than in anger. Adults drink and smoke in pubs, and there is quiet romantic tension involving a married woman. The frequent f-words are the reason for 14; otherwise it would suit younger viewers.

What's in it

Violence

None

No fights or injuries. A man tries to steal a street musician's earnings and gets chased, but no one is hurt. A few scenes show families crowded into small, run-down apartments.

Language

Strong

Frequent swearing, most of it the f-word used casually to express frustration or praise. One count found 32 obscenities in total, plus a couple of misuses of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sex scenes or nudity. A man awkwardly hints that a woman could spend the night, there is a joking mention of hanky panky, and there is unspoken romantic tension between a single man and a married woman.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink often in pubs and other social settings, and smoking is shown in pubs. A man drives after drinking and going without sleep. No drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

None

Nothing scary. The emotional weight comes from loneliness, an old breakup and two people who choose not to act on their feelings.

Worth talking about

The two leads clearly care for each other but respect her marriage. Can a relationship matter deeply even if it never becomes a romance?
