Stand by Me: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated R.

A warm, foul-mouthed coming-of-age story about four 12-year-old boys hiking to see a dead body, best for young teens watching with a parent. The boys swear constantly, including f-words and slurs, trade crude sexual jokes and smoke cigarettes, while older teens drink and drive. They face a train, leeches, a junkyard dog and a knife-wielding gang, and the body of a dead boy is shown. Grief over a brother's death and abusive fathers run underneath. Its R comes mostly from language rather than violence, so 14 is a reasonable floor.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Punches, a switchblade threat from older teens, and a pistol the boys handle carelessly and fire. Gang members carve their gang's name into each other's arms with a blade. A dead boy's twisted, bloody body is shown, and leech removal draws blood.

Language

Strong

Constant swearing from the 12-year-olds: Plugged In counted about 10 f-words and 25 s-words, plus 'goddamn,' 'asshole' and 'pussy,' slurs for gay people and people with intellectual disabilities, and cruel fat jokes.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

No sex, and reviewers note no nudity. The boys talk crudely about masturbation, breasts, 'getting laid' and dirty magazines, and a leech latching onto a boy's genitals is played for gross-out horror.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The boys smoke cigarettes. Older teens drink beer and play chicken with a car while drinking, and several fathers are described as heavy drinkers.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Real peril: the boys barely escape a train on a trestle, emerge from a pond covered in leeches, and face a junkyard dog and a knife-wielding gang. Seeing the dead boy and a funeral flashback for a beloved brother can upset sensitive kids.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child
  • Child abuse
  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Gordie feels invisible to parents who are still grieving his older brother. Talk about how grief changes a family and why friends like Chris matter.
