The Breakfast Club: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R.
A landmark teen drama best watched with older teens who can handle constant swearing, frank sexual talk and some dated attitudes. Five students in Saturday detention trade insults, smoke marijuana together and eventually open up about pressure and abuse at home. There are around 25 f-words and a homophobic slur, and one scene, now widely seen as sexual assault, has Bender push his head between Claire's knees under a desk without her consent; she later kisses him anyway. One student admits he thought about suicide over a failing grade. A strong conversation starter at 15 and up.
What's in it
Violence
StrongRated strong for one sexual assault: hiding under a desk, Bender pushes his head between Claire's knees without her consent, and the film treats it casually. Also a scuffle, an unused switchblade, the assistant principal's threats and a scar from a father's cigar burn.
Language
StrongConstant profanity: one guide counted about 25 f-words and as many s-words, plus "asshole," "bitch," "prick," crude anatomy terms, a homophobic slur, God's name misused and several obscene gestures.
Sex and nudity
ModeratePointed, crude talk about virginity and sexual reputations, a lie about being a nymphomaniac, and a camera angle up Claire's skirt that shows her underwear. Two couples kiss, one in a closet, with nothing further shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongThe group smokes marijuana from Bender's stash and gets visibly high, and the film frames it as the moment they bond. Bender smokes cigarettes, one student claims to drink vodka, and the assistant principal drinks beer at school.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNot scary, but emotionally heavy: students describe a father's physical abuse, neglect and crushing pressure to succeed, and one reveals he brought a flare gun to school while thinking about suicide.

Worth talking about
Claire's protests under the desk are played as flirting, and she ends up kissing Bender. How would that scene land today, and what does it get wrong about consent?
