Forrest Gump: parents' guide
Best for ages 14 and up. Rated PG-13 for drug content, some sensuality and war violence.
A beloved, big-hearted drama for teens that is heavier than its feel-good reputation suggests. A kind man with a low IQ drifts through decades of American history while loving his troubled childhood friend Jenny. Know going in: Jenny was abused by her father as a child, with sexual abuse implied, is later slapped by a boyfriend, uses cocaine and other drugs, performs nude in a club and considers suicide. There are bloody Vietnam battle scenes, Klan imagery and civil-rights-era racism, the deaths of several major characters including a parent, a clearly heard f-word, about ten s-words and the n-word. Age 14 reflects the drug use, nudity and abuse themes.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateVietnam combat with gunfire, explosions, blood-covered wounded and a friend dying, plus a lieutenant's mangled legs. Narration implies Jenny's father sexually abused her as a child (not shown). Kids throw rocks at young Forrest, a boyfriend slaps Jenny, and news footage shows assassinations.
Language
ModerateOne clearly heard f-word (others are cut off), about ten s-words, 'bitch,' 'bastard,' 'damn' and more than 20 misuses of God's name, mostly 'goddamn.' The n-word and 'retard' are used as insults.
Sex and nudity
ModerateJenny poses topless in a men's magazine (side view), sings nude in a club behind a guitar with her backside visible, and presses Forrest's hand to her bare breast. They later have sex, briefly seen from behind. Young Forrest overhears his mother trading sex for a favor.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongDuring her hippie years Jenny snorts cocaine and is shown around pipes and pills, and a companion with a syringe is implied to have just injected heroin. A wounded veteran drinks heavily in despair. Drinking and cigarette smoking appear throughout.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateYoung Jenny hides and prays in a cornfield from her drunk, abusive father, and narration implies he sexually abused her. As an adult she stands on a balcony ledge thinking about jumping. Several beloved characters die, including a mother, and the battle scenes are intense.

Worth talking about
Jenny's choices make more sense once you know what happened to her as a child. Talk with your teen about how early trauma can shape a life, and why Forrest's steady kindness matters to her.
