Easy A: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving teen sexuality, language and some drug material.

A smart, quick-witted comedy for older teens about a girl whose fake sexual reputation spirals out of control. Nearly every scene revolves around sex: rumors, virginity, a hookup faked with loud noises behind a locked door, and a guidance counselor's affair with a student, though no sex is shown. A quick nudist gag includes a bare breast, there are around 20 s-words, and one date turns pushy when a boy who paid Olive for a fake hookup expects the real thing. She is slut-shamed by classmates and a church group, while her parents are warm and funny. Best from 14.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A teen slaps a classmate, and an offscreen fight leaves a boy with a bloody nose. On a date, a boy who paid Olive to pretend they hooked up expects real sex, grabs at her and tries to force a kiss until she shoves him away.

Language

Moderate

About 20 s-words by one count, frequent "bitch," "damn" and "goddamn," crude anatomy slang, and insults like "whore," "skank" and "tw-t." One reviewer heard a single muffled word that sounds like an f-word.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Constant talk of sex, virginity, STDs and masturbation. Olive and a gay friend fake loud sex behind a door, she dresses in corsets, and a brief nudist gag shows a bare breast. A counselor's affair with a student is a subplot.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

A bong appears briefly, and Olive's dad jokingly offers it to her at dinner; she says no. Teens carry red cups at a party, implying drinking, and her parents drink wine with meals.

Scary or intense scenes

None

Nothing frightening. The tension is social: public shaming, gossip spreading online and a church group picketing and condemning Olive.

Sensitive topics

  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Rumors about Olive spread faster than any truth she tells. Why are girls judged so differently from boys for the same reputation, and how quickly does an online lie become accepted as fact?
